France, 1572. During an uneasy break in the wars of religion, Catholic King Charles IX (Jean-Hugues Anglade) concludes a marriage of state between his sister, Margot (Isabelle Adjani), and the Protestant Huguenot King Henry of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil), by ramming forward a reluctant Margot's head in lieu of a 'Oui'. But Margot's skull-faced Queen Mother (Virna Lisi) is already plotting the attack on the Huguenots that would come to be known as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, and Margot is in the throes of a throbbingly romantic affair with the Protestant La Môle (Vincent Pérez). The late Patrice Chéreau's high octane adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel begins in ?fth gear and never lets up, plunging in hip-deep in history and into a dizzying array of characters, with assionate performances and a riveting, horri?c staging of the Massacre. Originally released in the U.S. in a truncated version, this is the complete 159-minute director's cut.

Fascinating & Insightful look at the Medici family in France & the tensions b/w Catholics & emergent Protestantism, secular forces. Machiavellian intrigues are filmed realistically and with very good acting.

One of my absolute favorite movies. From beginning to end, there is an intensity that exhibits raw, unmitigated sincerity and passion. Queen Margot is a breathtaking feat of human achievement and one of film's greatest cultural artifacts. I am unrestrained in my total adoration of this movie.

A great film, amazing set and costume, realistic story telling of the past. A little long but we'll worth it.
