It is great what superb voice acting, gorgeous animation, engrossing characters, and realistic themes can do for an animated film, and this film called "Ribbit" is no exception, even though it is not a Pixar, Disney, nor Dreamworks movie. Surprisingly enough, This is truly a rare animated film that does not talk down to it's audience; nothing immature nor mindless. However, the plot of the film is thin and there's barley anything new about it, and some of the elements reminded me of Princess and the frog (2009), but the story offers great relatable themes like friendship, finding a purpose, and what we individuals are for and what makes this film so engaging is the animation, the voice performances from an exquisite cast, and the direction by Chuck Powers. The animation is beautifully bright and upbeat with some vivid detail and great character designs. But the animation does get weird at times when the characters stretch and bounce in strange exaggerated ways. The characters are fleshed out and captivating; Ribbit is a small adventurous poison tree frog (or poison "dart" frog) with a huge heart for the greater good. Sandy the flying squirrel (not very original) is a no-nonsense critter who is Ribbit's closest friend with a simple yet sad backstory. The relationship between the two provides some realistic friendship based on how real friends are portrayed because of how convincing their chemistry is. All thanks to the great voice performances by Sean Astin who voices Ribbit and Cherami Leigh who voices Sandy. Along the way they encounter new friends and deadly foes; Deepak (Russell Peters) is a manipulative bat who has answers to Ribbit's questions, but sometimes he is a slow witted which is tiring and some of the dialogue from him needs some improvement in places. Speaking of dialogue, there are five lines of dialogue said by Sandy that also needs some improvement. Kennie Dowle as the spider is a hungry threat that has the personality of a French chef which makes him a fun villainous predator. Terrence the toucan (Tim Curry) is a charming and jolly supporting character that does have some moments of dry eccentric comedy. The Manatee couple Jojo and Ollie are very jolly and romantic, but why did they decide to talk to each other in a different foreign language with English subtitles? Anyway, The main villains are the witch doctor (sounds familiar) and Kai the caiman. The witch doctor is one malevolent schemer with deliciously evil voice delivery by Valentine Cawley. Kai is not a gator or a croc, he is a hungry spectacled caiman who has a desire to eat both Ribbit and Sandy. Kai is voiced by Sonny Franks. The sound and acting of Sonny's voice gives Kai an authentic crocodilian voice with great precision; it's a low-bass raspy voice that makes him sound laid-back and fiercely menacing (excellent work). The music score is emotionally lively and pleasant. The movie's main theme song is called "Magical Moment" by an R&B group called Az Yet; not only that this song is a delightfully beautiful song, but it's also fitting because it has a lot to do with the elements of the film like friendship and romance. In conclusion: an utterly simplistic and unpolished yet utterly cute and pleasing animated film that will delight both kids and adults. three in a half out of five. Recommended.
