In this retelling of one of the greatest naval victories ever recorded, Roaring Currents pays unabashed tribute to a giant of Korean history - Admiral Yi Soon-shin, played here by veteran actor Choi Min-Sik (Oldboy, Lucy). Rousing dialogue, ships pummelling each other, and heaps of heroism are the order of the day, and on these aspects, the film does not disappoint. Minor points of contention include the CGI, which could have done with finer detail, and the casting of Korean actors in all-but-one of the Japanese-speaking roles. The latter is understandable, however, given the nature of the film. To conclude: Roaring Currents achieves all that it sets out to do in 110 minutes of lively entertainment. If you're into Korean culture or naval battles, you could do worse than give this film a chance.
