An inspirational true story, ROMERO captures the essence of one man's incredible courage, exploring the life of respected Archbishop Oscar Romero, who in 1980 made the ultimate sacrifice against social injustice and oppression in his country of El Salvador.

Golden Globe Award winner Raul Julia (The Burning Season, Kiss of the Spiderwoman) is Romero, a gentle spoken yet towering pillar of strength who makes the remarkable personal transformation from humble, complacent priest to vocal, committed leader of the Salvadoran people.

Speaking out against the death squads and the terror campaigns implemented by the government of the day to crush the growing rebel movement and concomitant guerrilla warfare, Romero's stance is considered both polemic and revolutionary, immediately perceived as an act of treason by the prevailing government. As fellow priests are attacked and churches shut down across the country, Romero's peaceful stance against impossible odds and the bloody terror of the ever-present military junta is a display of one man's conviction, buoyed by an undying love for his people.

Directed by John Duigan (Sirens, Far East), with a rousing score by Oscar winner Gabriel Yared (The English Patient), ROMERO is a captivating triumph of humanity over violence and hope over despair. 1989 PAULIST PICTURES

This is a difficult but important movie to watch. It is a dramatisation of the gradual radicalisation of a moderate conservative Catholic bishop at a critical time in the history of Christianity/Catholicism. Romero and other Catholic clergy who took on vested political and late stage capitalist interests in Latin America in the 60's and 70's were the influences on the current Pope (Francis), the context in which his views and ministry formed. Good intro to the history of the time. And Raul Julia is excellent!
