Power Rangers isn't a ground-breaker in the superhero genre. But in an era of Hollywood rebooting properties from our past, most of which being plain lackluster, it shifted my expectations to turbo, coming off as a heartfelt and fun surprise. The best part about this reboot of the cheesy 90's phenomenon is that it adds more depth to the lore and characters of its franchise. Dean Israelite, director of the indie science-fiction flick Project Almanac, managed to add his greatest strength to the rangers; making their personalities and situations more believable and realistic (well, as realistic as Power Rangers can get). Each of them are misfits, having their own little quirks and stories that they must venture through to become the team they were meant to be. The solid acting from the main cast helps as well, with additional shout-outs to the hammy Elizabeth Banks and goofy Bill Hader. My only real complaint is that the film doesn't balance the character development and ranger action enough. I wasn't too bothered by it, but I presume people who wanted to see the classic fights will be a bit disappointed.

It was great seeing the teens as real people than the group of Goodie-goods in the original series. they had issues and flaws. And is gives us Older fans what we have been asking for for the last umpteen years: A mature Power Rangers film. Sure it's not the one on Youtube (not a fan of it) but it suffices to give us older viewers the sort of things we want to see while keeping it kid friendly-ish (it DOES have pg-13 language). While looking at it as a fan I can say this movie did well as a retelling of the original Rangers. Rather than a hastily thrown together plot slapped over Japanese/American hybrid footage, Saban took his time and re crafted the story To make a bit more sense. Now looking at it as a regular movie goer, Its a good sci-fi action movie. Good plot and character insight.

This was a really good movie. I'm a huge fan of the original series and this is a fun salute to that as well as a more modern take on things. I see a lot of negative reviews seem to call the story an acting bad but I quite enjoyed it. The characters are flawed and endearing regular kids like you might find anywhere and they actually grow to care about each other becoming friends. Sure they come off as problem kids at first but as you get to know and care about people you understand they have their own struggles and motivations and are worth caring about. You know like humans do? The acting was fine. All of the cast seem to be having a great time in this goofy movie about colorful teenage superheroes in robot dinosaurs. There are a lot of callbacks to the original with cameos, camera shots mirroring the orginal show, and mythology jokes. Another thing I see is complaints about the resemblance to Michael Bay's Transformers. It's nothing more than a passing resemblance. There's even a jab at this IN THE MOVIE ITSELF. All together this is a fun movie with a likeable cast, a healthy respect for the original series without taking itself too seriously, and a nice addition to the Power Rangers franchise. No it's not the orginal and that's fine. That's not going anywhere so if you want that it's still around. This movie is fun, campy, love note to the orginal that can stand on it's own and I can honestly recommend it to you.
