Live-in nurse Maud arrives at the home of Amanda, a famous dancer now frail from illness and trapped in her grand, isolated house. At first Amanda is intrigued by this religious young woman, who provides distraction from her failing health. Maud, in turn, is bewitched by her new patient. But Maud is not all that she seems. She is tormented by a violent secret from her past and by ecstatic messages she believes are directly from God. She becomes convinced she has been sent to Amanda not simply as a nurse, but to serve a divine purpose. As her grip on reality slides out of control, Maud's care turns into a deadly mission to save Amanda's soul, by any means necessary.

This is an incredible horror / drama. The tension builds fantastically, the unease creeps up on you bit by bit, which makes the pay off at the end so satisfying. The soundtrack is also great. This isn't a trashy jump scare horror film so I suggest the other reviewers rating this so low go and watch something more down their street like The Nun or something.

This had me captivated from the outset. Stunning debut from the director Rose Glass and classy throughout with a solid lead from Morfydd Clark. I would class this as psychological horror. The location (Scarborough) is perfect - some lovely outdoor daytime and night scenes provide relief from the claustrophobic bedsit where troubled nurse Maud resides. It also contrasts nicely with the low lit art deco(?) home of her charge Amanda. If you like a top class British horror - and this is up there with the best - then you won't be disappointed.

I saw this in cinema (limited showings) It's one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. People on rating the movie as "brilliant" are lying or on some sort of medication lol
