During the final days of the 1997 election campaign, Labour candidate Bertie Oldcross is out campaigning with his manager Simon when they accidentally run over a local man in the darkness. Reporting the accident would be political suicide, so they decide to cover it up in the hope of fulfilling their political ambitions.
