Arthur Brennan (McConaughey) is an American professor who travels to Japan during a time of personal crisis. While wandering through a mysterious forest, he meets Takumi (Watanabe), an enigmatic stranger who is injured and lost. Arthur devotes himself to saving Takumi, and the two embark on a spiritual journey that may ultimately re-connect Arthur with his love for his wife (Watts).
