Not shallow and dumb, thanks Sci-Fi Channel. To put my and my wife's enjoyment of this movie into perspective, we had no knowledge of the TV show whatsoever going into our viewing. Despite that, we had no problem following the film's story or getting involved with the characters. The storyline has some Richard Matheson-type vibes that deepens the plot a little more than you might expect from an action-oriented sci-fi movie. The action itself is very fun and exciting, especially the very well-paced finale that has it all (quick but intense space battle, small band of rebels versus hordes of baddies, mano-a-mano fight, one versus hoarde Matrix-style fight, etc). Despite it containing plenty of sci-fi cliches the movie is still thoroughly enjoyable. I said I probably wouldn't go backwards to the TV series after seeing this, but eventually I did and kinda wished I hadn't; the movie is almost better standalone. However, I'd be a big fan of a Serenity sequel to see where they could go with some of these characters and the world they inhabit.

Firefly is argueably one of the best shows ever made. Serenity just gave it the clean ending fans were looking for. Cancelling firefly was an epic mistake and shows how short-sighted TV exec's are. Its really sad. If you haven't seen firefly, its on Netflix or you can rent it I'm sure but see it. Its the most smartly written show that's been out in a long time. Or go back to watching mind-numbing reality shows...

Gorram FOX to pluperfect hell for mishandling Firefly, its cast, and the entire production staff. It still turns my stomach to recall that overpaid nonentities (mostly just one)were able to destroy so much, in so little time. All done, of course, without the slightest apology, or even an acknowledgement of the clusterf..ck they had perpetrated - and gotten very well-paid for. So, on with her and/or them, into the interior of a (supermassive)² black hole.
