Based on a true story, C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) is a world renowned writer and professor. Unmarried, he leads a gentleman's life filled by intellectual pursuits, remaining untouched by any great passion until he meets Joy Gresham (Debra Winger). Joy is a feisty, abrasive New York divorcee whose sharp-edged, no-nonsense attitudes take Lewis by surprise. Bursting unexpectedly into Lewis' world, Joy shocks his associates and awakens him to deep emotions he had written about, but never experienced. Slowly he opens his heart to this woman, and their romance shatters the walls of his cloistered world. But life is made up of delicate balances, and Lewis must confront a terrible truth: that a heart awakened to great love is also opened to great pain. Even though this movie does not follow the facts perfectly (probably for brevity) it certainly gives the flavor of their lives and unusual romance. NOT to be confused with the British version... this one is much better!

This is not just a movie, its an experience and one you will not forget. Its a love story and a true romance. The main characters are pushed to their limits spiritually. Their faith in God is tested and they are stronger for it. In the end, the boy becomes a man and CS Lewis finally understands what Joy is all about.

If you want to be Surprised by Joy then you'll want to give Shadowlands a look. When on DVD, it was hard to find due to a studio going bankrupt and DVD copies were hard to come by. So yourself a favor and watch this with someone you love.
