The lovers' drama unfolds through the observations of a friend and would-be writer, Stingo (Peter MacNicol). As the trio grows closer, Stingo uncovers the hidden truths that they each harbor, resulting in "a fine, absorbing, wonderfully acted, heartbreaking movie" (Roger Ebert).
