I didn't even know this was a movie until I was fumbling around on YouTube. I bought the album a few weeks ago and had no idea there was a documentary. Up until now, I was totally clueless as to what Sound City meant or what Tom Petty's voice was heard on the first track. That being said, this documentary is less about Sound City and more about the human element in music. In no way am I trying to take away from the story of the Sound City studio because it's a good one, but the film is really a battle between the human element made Sound City great and digital recording. The film culminates in the making of the album I previously purchased and adore. It is an ode to recording with other people and not always getting it right. Those tiny imperfections in recording and those times when an artist didn't hit a note is what makes music genuine.

I was really really impressed with this movie. Over the years i got a little weary of seeing Dave Grohl & the Foo Fighters everywhere & hailed as such a great band. This movie let me see the human/artist side of Dave & what connecting with other musicians really means to an artist. The movie was obviously about Sound City & the impact it had years ago but i really loved hearing what the musicians had to say about creating art that matters. Watch this movie till the end for some really cool jam sessions!

The movie is overall very enjoyable, though the central thesis is generally undefined, going from the recording studio to the console as the protagonist. Awesome footage (RATM clips recording their first album!), and the last 30 minutes or so is stretched out long if you don't enjoy the music (I loved the music).
