The answer is Soylent Green - an artificial nourishment whose actual ingredients are not known by the public. I've wanted to see this for so long, and it's been worth the wait. Surprisingly, "Soylent Green" is a literate, intellectually stimulating portrayal of life in the not too distant future. Maybe it's a little too realistic for comfort, but that what's makes it such a good film. Extremely downbeat for a Hollywood movie, but prescient, and compelling. The visuals of a rundown society with no food, and the majority of people living on the street confront the viewer with a world of the future that could possibly become a reality. Charlton Heston is outstanding as a police detective investigating the mysterious death of a rich and influential businessman. Edward G Robinson has a poetic turn as a philosophical old man who knows this world he is living in is not the one he cares to remember. "The scoops are coming for you" is a memorable phrase in a sequence that illustrates the fate of the unnamed and neglected poor who rebel against their fate with disastrous consequence. I don't understand why this film isn't more well known, but with enough word of mouth, it should reach the audience it deserves.
