About this movie

A band of determined Russian soldiers fight to hold a strategic building in their devastated city against a ruthless German army, and in the process become deeply connected to a Russian woman who has been living there. In Stalingrad, directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, the scale of the battle contrasts dramatically with the human drama of the Russian soldiers, the few remaining civilians and their invaders into Stalingrad.

Let me put it to you very simply, this film is non historic, and plays a lot like the propaganda film Pearl Harbor. It's intention is for a younger generation in Russia to have a fascination with the war with the Nazi. The film is an utter failure of story telling, Russians behave like they have found Mary Poppins and do not attempt to rape her, because she is over the age of 18 and now an old widow. Propaganda at it's finest, the way the war never was.

UGHH, I found this to be pretty lame and not worth the 3 bucks it cost. The story line is weak and even the battle scenes seemed too over the top for my taste. I didn't care for the way the story was laid out, by a narrator reliving a tale he wasn't part of. And on top of that, it was a love story for Christ sake! Now I wasn't there, but based on documentaries I've seen there was no love and little if any humanity; it was an all out fight for survival that pushed some to lose their minds completely and others to commit cannibalism. It was an ugly, brutal battle and there was no reason for the writer/producer to take the line that they did. This battle was too epic for it to be trivialized the way that it was in this movie. I'm sorry, that's just the way I see it. In the spirit of finding something good about this movie, the set was well done and the actors, in particular the German officer, did a good job. It's not their fault the story was marred from the beginning.

This is a very under rated film, maybe the best attempt to bring such a large scale battle with millions of deaths of soldiers and civilians into some visual perspective that could even remotely be understood in a relate able fashion given the constraints that a film has and still be entertaining to watch without being a detail oriented documentary .
