Admiral Kirk's defeat of Khan and the creation of the Genesis planet are empty victories. Spock is dead and McCoy is inexplicably being driven insane. Then a surprise visit from Sarek, Spock's father, provides a startling revelation: McCoy is harboring Spock's living essence. With one friend alive and one not, but both in pain, Kirk attempts to help his friends by stealing the U.S.S. Enterprise and defying Starfleet's Genesis planet quarantine. But the Klingons have also learned of Genesis and race to meet Kirk in a deadly rendezvous.

Most underrated Trek film, imo. Sandwiched between two of Trek's best movies, which highlights its flaws moreso than it would be otherwise. Flows nicely from the last movie, dealing with the fallout from Trek 2, but almost to its own detriment, where it feels like Trek 2.5 instead of its own movie. Still has great character moments, and events that ripple for a few movies and tv show episodes that came after. Definitely worth watching immediately after Trek 2.

For those of us who appreciate these characters and their relationships, this is a neat , somewhat tidy, and satisfying resurrection of Spock..., albeit a grievous loss of the original Enterprise. On the other hand, none of the major motion pictures really rival the creative and philosophical depth of the weekly episodic television adventures anyway. Maybe a little too quick to dispense with the Genesis project, Kirk's son, and they even might've kept us grieving Spock for another whole episode before bringing him back in a fourth movie? Christopher Lloyd and John Larroquette made perfectly good Klingons when I first saw this and they were unknown to me, but now a little more difficult to take Doc Brown and the Night Court guy seriously. :)

I love this one because it shows how deep the connection between the characters are. They are willing to sacrafice everything to do the right thing. This movie is part of the 2,3,4 trilogy so make sure you watch wrath of Khan first.
