It is the 23rd century. The Federation Starship U.S.S. Enterprise™ is on routine training maneuvers and Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) seems resigned to the fact that this inspection may well be the last space mission of his career. But Khan is back. Aided by his exiled band of genetic supermen Khan (Ricardo Montalban) - brilliant renegade of 20th century Earth - has raided Space Station Regula One stolen a top secret device called Project Genesis wrested control of another Federation starship and now schemes to set a most deadly trap for his old enemy Kirk... with the threat of a universal Armageddon!

This is a great movie, probably the best "Classic Trek" movie, and the director's cut fleshes out some aspects of the story, especially how much Midshipman Preston meant to Scottie, and why. Lacking in this particular Director's Cut edition is Kirk and Spock's dialogue as they are traveling through the Jeffreries Tubes, just before re-joining battle with Khan; "That young man is my son" - "Fascinating". It was a nice moment, deleted for some reason, even though the video component is present. Otherwise, faithful to the original Director's Cut, with much improved sound and excellent quality video. I bought it in HD, even though it is older, and don't regret it. Well worth having, especially if you know a horizontal intermix column from a vertical one.

I'm sure most hardcore trekkies have seen this movie dozens of times. but I'll say it anyway. This is in my opinion the best of all of the Star Trek movies with Kirk and Spock. Absolutely superb. Trust me... Skip "Star Trek the Motion Picture", jump straight to "Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan", and then watch three and four, afterwards, skip 5 and then check out 6. That's about it.

Quintessentially not just the best Trek movie ever but possible actually. From its full connection with the original series to the strength all on its own as a story, it is a tour de force of the universe Roddenberry imagined. Other inventive & creative minds will come along as good, if not better, to leave their stamp upon future Trek-verse materials but all will use this movie as the highest standard to possibly achieve.
