This has always been one of my family's favorite Star Trek movies. It is not like you would expect, and takes a very different pace than some of the other movies. It mixes humor with action to create a movies that everyone can enjoy. The story is well written and the villain's motivations are clear and understandable. You grow to care about the new characters introduced and you also appreciate the growth of the characters you know. Like many of the original Star Trek episodes, it has a moral problem that is actually problematic. It makes you think a little. If you aren't sure, borrow it from a friend first, but I personally think it is worth buying.

This feels far too much like a retread of where the show has gone before and not in a good way. While I can't speak for everyone this movie is the worst Star Trek movie and it's not even close. It ranks down there with a lot of Voyager, my opinion.

I think I had only originally seen this one in the theater, so I wanted to refresh my opinion of it. It was as I remembered: terribly underwhelming. It really comes across as a long TV episode instead of the cinema quality of First Contact. It really is a step backwards for the Next Generation cast: after saving the entire human race in the last movie this one tries to show how important it is but fails when the level of involvement is simply a group of villagers. Maybe that was the whole point, but it loses something in the execution. A lot of strange character choices that don't seem to jive with previous movies or the TV show also drags down the mediocre plot. Jerry Goldsmith's score is also a step backwards from his excellent First Contact pieces; the astute direction of Frakes also takes a hit after his previous outing. It's just an overall disappointing Next Generation movie, more so given the previous one was so good.
