The Director' Cut is a definite improvement over the original theatrical version. The sound effects are much better, the annoying computer voice on the Enterprise has been eliminated, and the new visual effects blend in seamlessly with the original footage. The film could still have been more tightly edited, and its nickname of "Motionless Picture" is still well-deserved. But for all its flaws, the core elements of Star Trek are all here. So give ST1 a look, for the human adventure starts here!

This is the version that was released several years ago, The Directors Edition that Robert Wise did. The main being added visual effects that added to the movie and in my opinion made the movie much better then the original. That being said, the added effects were done in Standard Edition and not High Definition. In order for this to be on Blu-ray, The Directors Edition would have to be redone with new effects. Paramount has already stated this will not be done except St II TWOK Directors Cut.

I hold this movie with high regard as it was my first introduction to Star Trek, yet not the first time I had seen it. The Next Generation was the first time I saw it, but was more of a long glance before the commercial break drove me away. While this is not the best of Star Trek, it sure is a glimpse of what Next Generation was going to be. A deeply introspective science fiction show. It's sequel, Wrath of Khan, was not what Roddenberry had in mind, yet I can't agree it was a huge departure.
