So far this movie is the pinnacle of Star Wars greatness. With the Empire Strikes Back the Rebels are on the run from the Galactic empire. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to destroy their ultimate weapon because now, their resolve to defeat the rebel alliance has seemed to find new footing. Despite this, our heroes have their great moments and further define their chemistry and dynamics. Han and Leia must escape the empire in a thrilling chase sequence punctuated by some of the most wonderful music John Williams has ever composed plays. Luke must travel to Dagobah to learn the secrets of the force. Amid his doubt, Yoda teaches him some powerful, wonderful, beautiful lessons, again, punctuated by John William's score... which is nothing short of absolutely magical and tear-jerking. But tragedy is sure to follow... Luke confronts Darth Vader and the consequences of this confrontation will forever alter his destiny with those words we all know so well... The Empire Strikes Back is a work of magic. Somehow, everything came together perfectly, and it somehow manages to top A new hope to be not just the best Star Wars... but quite possibly, the best science fiction film of all time.

Irving Kershner's experience directing drama combine with the deft writing of sci-fi legend Leigh Brackett and Lawerence Kasdan to bring the Empire Strikes Back to life. This is, more than any other film thus far in the franchise, a personal story. But, it is by no means devoid of action. In spite of departing from the pulp space opera roots of the original Star Wars, Empire still maintains a sense of continuity in theme even if the tone changes to a far darker film. It is a strong transition from pulp serial to hero's journey. The majority of the special effects stand the test of time, though some of the CGI added for the "Special Edition" is a bit glaring. However, in the case of Cloud City, the heavily metropolis finally feels open and airy thanks to these changes and the HD quality of the film is definitely an upgrade. I can't recommend this film enough, though if by some miracle you've never seen a Star Wars film, start with Star Wars: A New Hope first. Empire picks up where it leaves off and assumes you've seen the previous film.
