Visionary director J.J. Abrams brings to life the motion picture event of a generation. As Kylo Ren and the sinister First Order rise from the ashes of the Empire, Luke Skywalker is missing when the galaxy needs him most. The criticisms of The Force Awakens are valid and this film does have its shortcomings. Nevertheless J.J. Abrams manages to get away with it and provide us with exhilarating fun. It is a welcome return to form after the disappointment of the prequel films. Going back to the artwork for the original films, the return to real locations, sets and puppeted creatures really pays off. This movie looks fantastic and feels like Star Wars. There's action and laughs as well as darker moments. We're introduced to new characters and Abrams succeeds at making us love them. Daisy Ridley is a standout as Rey and BB-8 is a delight. The old team returns with Harrison Ford having by far the most screen time which he pulls off with ease and is clearely having a blast. It might not be perfect but as Lucasfilm's and Disney's first tentative steps into a Star Wars universe without George Lucas at the helm, this is a solid, confidence building effort that successfully sets up a new chapter in the Star Wars saga while seamlessly and believably reintroducing us to familiar faces. It leaves us wanting more waiting expectantly to find out what happens next, just as a Star Wars movie should.

Maybe my expectations were too high, which I blame on over enthusiastic global reviews. But this rehash was a major disappointment for me. Despite good special effects, the story was just plain crap. As for old grey hairs Solo, he aint got it anymore. Oh wait he carked it anyway. And Skywalker was a no show until the boring end. Nope. Not cool.

Star Wars has been part of my life from the beginning so I went into this movie with great trepidation... I came out wanting to see it again immediately. It contained all the elements that made the original trilogy so great - action, drama, humour, tragedy, cool characters, intriguing locations, and fantastic music. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to see the next installments.
