This movie was poorly thought out and fought with overt social justice themes. It's a cash grab that rips off it's best elements from previous movies and utterly squanders what original source material it did have. Luke isn't the Luke we know. Hes a broken coward and they never give a satisfactory explanation for why the most optimistic guy in the galaxy just threw in the towel after 1 tragedy. Mark Hamill himself said he "fundamentally disagreed with every choice [Rian Johnson] made for his character". Major plot points from the last movie are cast aside or simply ignored (Reys Parents, the fate of the Galactic Republic following the events of The Force Awakens). Major villains are wasted without developing their backstory and overarching role in the saga. Character motivations are often missing or dont match with actions taken throught the movie. Dramatic scenes are often undercut for brief "Marvel" type gags and there is a general lack of cohesion throughout most of the third act. In all this is a dumpster fire that isn't quite as bad as The Phantom Menace, but wasn't much better than Attack of the Clones. Save your money and watch Infinity Wars.

An absolutely awful movie. The villains are totally incompetent, the heroes are uninspiring and more interested in cracking bad jokes than solving problems at hand. I'm not even going to bother getting into all the ways it hurt star wars lore (though there is a ton of that). This is just an objectively bad movie. -Rey, the main hero, is utterly aimless. She does the right thing and wins every single time without any reason or motivation. -Rose Tico and her side plot with Finn accomplishes absolutely nothing, then they make out while their base gets blown up. While also not getting killed by the enemies literally right in front of them. No I'm not kidding. -Everything in this movie happens because Admiral Holdo wouldn't take command and just tell everyone she had a damn plan. I could go on and on and on about this film's various plot holes and poor writing, but it honestly just compounds as you think about it. Every flaw becomes more and more glaring because of the other 500 you've already found. It's not from being nit picky. If I have to turn my brain off to enjoy your film, it's not a good film...

I really enjoyed this film. I have watched the original trilogy many times and have seen the prequels more than I'd like to admit. But The Last Jedi took the tried and true Star Wars tropes and threw them out of the window and the series is better for it. If Kylo Ren would have been a copy of Vader, fans would be screaming for a different type of villain because no one tops Darth Vader. Sure I'd like to have known more about Snoke, but the way he was disposed of was cool because it changes the course of future Star Wars and keeps the old formula from getting stale. Rey isn't a Skywalker or a Kenobi, establishing the fact that anyone can rise up and be a hero. Finn's development felt rushed but he got to a place that I felt was earned. I didn't care for the infamous Leia scene but it at least opened up the door for new Force abilities instead of levitating rocks and tricking minds. We also didn't need to see Luke Skywalker imitate his old master, Ben Kenobi. It was jarring yet brilliant to see him like that but I think long time fans would have just complained if Luke was just a generic wise Master. Some scenes towards the end felt rushed and forced but I will pass judgement when the series is complete. Time will tell where this divisive film will end up on the best rated Star Wars movies but to me it should at least be near the top.
