In 1939, Professor Paul Langford and his daughter Catherine are still grappling with the mysteries of the ancient relic they discovered in the Egyptian desert more than ten years ago. With war looming in Europe and funding running out, these brilliant minds are approaching their lowest ebb. Little do they know, answers are about to present themselves in a dangerous form, when the Nazi Occultist Dr. Wilhelm Brücke approaches their facility with a sinister motive. Enlisting the help of two young soldiers, Catherine must use all of her wit and nous as she and her new allies embark on an adventure into the unknown to rescue her father, and save the Earth from an unimaginable darkness.

I absolutely love Stargate, and have watched everything connected to the IP. I grew up on a (un)healthy diet of SG1, and I was thrilled to see the IP put something else out. Pros: it's Stargate, and while campy, it's fun and even plays with System Lord politics in a way even the SG1 rarely captured. It also had Ra's ship from the original film which was a cool addition. Cons: It disrupted the cannon timeline, and the way they put it back together was patchwork at best. It was the level of campy I expect from Dr. Who, but Stargate (especially as it got more advanced) has always been a bit more gritty.

Like everything else that came before it in the franchise it has it's own flavor. Mostly consistent with existing canon and it tries to tie up loose ends, but SG1 did more retconing of the original movie than Origins does in general, plus there's plenty within the tv canon that contradicts itself so I don't mind too much. A fun adventure with good characters and great callbacks. Glad we finally have more Stargate and hope things only get better and they give us more of the answers to questions we've been asking for years.

Obviously a low budget but nevertheless a watchable movie for fans. In places a bit cheesey and somewhat pandering to the idea that the female lead must drive the story. SG1 was more an essemble piece and better for it. The British officer accent was a bit pompous. Probably was in 1938. Jarring but maybe accurate. Don't know how they powered the gate with a car battery. The movie was rather the same as Rogue One to Star Wars. A related story rather than a main theme. I wondered if she broke cartouche was the one later found by Daniel Jackson. Dark in places. Indiana Jones echo with the Nazi theme. Overall a good one off to keep Stargate breathing in 2018.
