C.C. Baxter anonyme employé d'une gigantesque société d'assurances, prête son appartement comme garçonnière à son supérieur. Ce geste lui vaut une promotion mais aussi des ennuis. En effet, le soir de Noël, il découvre chez lui la charmante liftière d'ascenseur de la compagnie qui a tenté de se suicider par désespoir.

**Warning** Infidelity and suicide in this film. 'The Apartment' is an amazingly crafted story from start to finish. No wasted dialog/scenes, motivations make perfect sense, and all of the acting is brilliant (I'll never look at Fred MacMurray the same way again). While it's listed as a comedy (and it is for about 3/5 of it); it takes a very hard turn over halfway through and is more drama/satire than comedy till the end. Highly recommended -for adults only-.
