As teenagers, the two protagonists fall in love, a love that is pure, deep, lasting and complete. From the beginning, his family of social outcasts and criminals led by a father who abused him, is the ominous cloud of evil in his life. Yet he is normal, intellectually and emotionally gifted and the young woman who falls in love with him shares the same gifts. It is a beautiful relationship of equals. Before they can take their relationship to the 'nest' level, his family involves him in an ugly event. The result is a separation of some 20 years until they meet again and realize they have loved each other during the separation, and experience it once again in its fullness. They are about to join their lives together when another unspeakable event involving his family occurs to him at the same time as her son is grievously injured in an accident. The denouement is such a powerful and pivotal moment in the tale, it has to be experienced rather than related on this page. The acting and the cinematography are evocative. I loved, it was a beautifully made movie it was intense, sad and happy at times throughout the movie. I really do not agree with the "rotten tomato" rating guys it'd all from guys and guys really don't know what makes a good romantic movie so they really should not be putting in their two cents. Definately watch it, it's a must see!
