This is a classic, and don't mind the black and white movie, it still looks good and is ever so engaging. Bogart can really draw you in and his skill for verbal banter is excellent. He is quick witted in a way that is charismatic and admired. The way that he and Bacall play sly love games with words and entice each other is very entertaining. This is a true detective story with many twists and turns. You have to keep up with the characters as different names are introduced within each scene. This movie has a lot of themes and deals with issues that are beneath the surface, most of which are criminal and erotic. In the movie it isn't quite clear what some of the clues Marlowe has actually found, but the photos are connected with pornography, and Vivian, to gambling. This movie is developed from a book by the same name and the book's sordid details couldn't be played out on screen as in the days that this film was made, many of the controversial issues couldn't be displayed on film. This was a true classic and Bogart always brings on the masculine charm and toughness. It's more of a action and suspense movie than a romance but will be enjoyed by all.
