Horribly disjointed film, with scene after scene unable to realistically show character, situation or plot. In fact, there is no plot. Unrealistic, unnatural, forced naval gazing, with no soul, feeling or understanding of it's subject matter, the film also bizarrely mixes a depressing classical score with a bizarre jazz score, neither of which resonate with the plot or the visuals. The dialogue is pompous, pointless and nonsensical. It's clear no one involved knows anything about anything.

Not even Bill Nighy presence in this film could lift it out of the darkness that encapsulates it, from start to finish. It took me two days to watch it as it was so boring but I had to get to the end. Just to see what happened to everyone in it. The best bit we only saw from a distance which was the burning of the bookshop at the end. The acting was poor and no one smiled in it, I have no knowledge where this place is but if I ever see it on a road sign I will make every effort to miss it and its inhabitants and leave them to there boring existence. unless you are a manic depressive I would not hire or buy this film but just chuck the money you would have spent on it in the river. I had to give it one star as you cant give no stars, which I would have if I could.
