Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader's THE CARD COUNTER. Told with Schrader's trademark cinematic intensity, the revenge thriller tells the story of an ex-military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions, and features riveting performances from stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe.

The plot is convoluted, the message is obscure, and the film is a croc. The woke relationship with La Linda, the female lead, is abysmal. Cirk, the kid, is played poorly by an actor who I am not even going to bother finding out his name. The soundtrack grated on my nerves like fingernails down a sandpaper wall. Tragically, there was the genus of a good idea here somewhere, but because it was but a fragment, it got lost in the wash. If you enjoy it, all power to you. Frankly, I expected better of this director.

Intense, brooding, vengeful and brilliant performance by Oscar Isaac. Paul Schrader is a legend. Fave film of 2022 so far. If you watch Marvel films though, probably not for you.

Atrocious excuse for a film. I am astounded that Scorsese stood behind this. Affirming MrStanleySass' entire review.
