The twist at the end is superb. Cruise comes off perfectly as the cocky newby, Newman nails it as the seasoned teacher/manager, and Mary Elizabeth fills the void between the two pool sharks. Great cast. Great script. Loved it. I'm a pool player but will sincerely admit... pool was the least of my admiration of this flick. Its just a good film. Period.

One dimensional story, and pool is hard to watch for a whole movie. Do watch "The Hustler." Tom Cruise ludicrously plays the part that Paul Newman brilliantly played in "The Hustler." Also, the director of "Hustler" wisely uses the billiard table as a plot device to display brilliant characters and their stories. Jackie Gleason, and George C. Scott are fantastic. The plot summary says Newman recreates his part from, "Hustler." No! Tom Cruise tries to do that. Newman plays the shill.

Keith McCready is awesome! Loved playing 9 ball with him and his brother Mark.
