Fritz Lang's Sci-Fi Masterpiece With 25 Minutes of Restored Footage
One of the most celebrated movies in cinema history...For the first time, Lang's vision... which has influenced contemporary films like "Blade Runner" and "Star Wars," seems complete. — The New York Times
Incorporating more than 25 minutes of newly discovered footage, this 2010 restoration of METROPOLIS is the definitive edition of Fritz Lang's science fiction masterpiece. Backed by a new recording of Gottfried Huppertz's 1927 score (presented here in 5.1 Stereo Surround), the film's dazzling visual design and special effects are more striking than ever. And the integration of scenes and subplots long considered lost endows METROPOLIS with even greater tension and emotional resonance, as it dramatizes the conflict between wealthy über-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers—orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them both.

I'll post a short review as this has been my favorite movie since I saw the Giorgio Moroder cut in the 1980s as a young kid. And I have this version on DVD. There is still footage they are finding to this day, but I'm not sure if we will ever see any of it. Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece still holds many truths in today's world (esoteric, spiritual, political, psychological; it's all here!)

I first read of Lang's masterpiece in the pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland. Star Wars was still new & there were no VCRs, & anyway I never saw any late night TV listings for Metropolis. I didn't see any version of the movie till 2018. Truly the Forbidden Planet or Star Wars of its time. Incredible visuals, esoteric symbolism, an allegory of the disparity between the elite & low classes, & a strange, haunting sf atmosphere. Iconic mad doctor Rotwang & robot Maria steal the whole macabre show.
