In The Day the Earth Stood Still, a contemporary reinvention of the 1951 science fiction classic, renowned scientist Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) finds herself face to face with an alien called Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who travels across the universe to warn of an impending global crisis.

Anyone want to tell me WHY this had to be remade? The original was a classic work of science fiction, with cold war overtones. This disjointed mess with it's 'earth day' message just reeks. I really wanted to like it, but while Keanu's detached style lends itself to many characters, the 'alien' needs some passion. He was a messenger in the original, but he expressed concern that the earth might be wiped out because of it's short sighted ness. There are original ideas, hollywood. Try one or two from time to time. Take a chance, something wonderful might come out of it.

It started out interesting, but I was raised on the original movie released in black and white. I fully expected this movie to at least follow a similar plot, but it went an entirely different direction than it should have. The original plot was about an alien that was sent to warn humans of their self destruction. This strange movie is about an alien that just happens to come to earth at the same time as a giant robot that he ends up deciding to prevent from massacring the human race. Ultimately, the movie ended much sooner than it should have, and the plot never really caught my attention. Some of my favorite actors, I feel, were completely wasted in this movie.

I got caught up in the action, it was interesting and entertaining with decent special effects. These qualities were actually crucial distractions because the second time I watched it almost ruined it for me. It seemed so contrived, with many cliches and plot holes. So much didn't make sense and Klaatu seemed kind of stupid and boneheaded
