About this movie

The spectacular vistas of Africa become the setting of unthinkable horror in The Dead, the haunting and highly anticipated zombie road movie from emerging talents Jonathan and Howard J. Ford.

American Air Force engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy (Rob Freeman: Saving Private Ryan) is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the wilds of Africa. It was the last evacuation flight off the continent and now he must run the gauntlet across Africa where the dead are returning to life in the hope of finding another way out.

Joining forces with local military man Sergeant Daniel Dembele (Prince David Osei) who is desperately searching for his missing son amongst the chaos, they must fight together if they are to survive the flesh-eating horrors of the bush. © 2010 Indelible Productions UK Ltd

Both actors had a lot more to offer this; the lack of a script prevented them from being better in it than they were. The 'spectacular vistas of Africa' are rarely seen - just a lot of close-ups and mid-shots of dusty places with scrubby greenery which could be in outback Australia. The real star of this is the heroic Vauxhall truck, which puts up with terrible conditions, worse driving, and a leaden plot. Don't bother with this movie - it lacked plot, script, appropriate cinematography, and score.

Damned fine movie, bleak but definitely worth watching. I especially liked that the undead were slow movers, it really accentuates the creeping dread and makes for a far better sense of impending doom than the cheap, thoughtless "jump scares" given by any running zombie movie. There are a few negatives, some of the acting felt a little wooden and I thought there may have been some misses with continuity but overall, if you're a fan of old school zombie flicks or even if you're just taken by the African landscape, then you really should watch this movie.
