Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham, THE DRESSMAKER is a bittersweet, comedy-drama set in early 1950’s Australia. Tilly Dunnage (KATE WINSLET), a beautiful and talented misfit, after many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Not only does she reconcile with her ailing, eccentric mother Molly (JUDY DAVIS) and unexpectedly falls in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (LIAM HEMSWORTH), armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, she transforms the women of the town and in doing so gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong. A truly Australian story telling reminiscent of Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom. This story mixes the darkness of revenge with the glamour of fashion, a dash of camp & tragedy that will break the hardest of hearts. This film tells the story of a girls return to her backward, gossipy and just plain nasty, home town. Her return shows us some quintessential Australian characters, the bias of the 50s stereotypes and a wonderful but sad story of how a persecuted girl is used to buy others, and her return to learn why, and her resultant revenge. You will chuckle, fall in love and shed a tear.

It's an okay sort of comedy. Somewhat plodding and nothing on Priscilla or Muriel. The cinematography is amazing so it's beautiful to look at and the actors and actresses are all pretty good. The comedy feels forced and the storyline is paper thin. There were a few comic moments but not enough to really make you laugh out loud. I'd have given this a higher score but I've taken a star off because the presentation of the film here on PLAY doesn't have subtitles. As a person with a hearing problem, these are an absolute must-have. Normally if I had a film like this on DVD with no subtitles, I'd rip it to disk and find an appropriate SRT file to make it watchable. Obviously I can't do that with PLAY so instead; Google, you need to lift your game.

I didn't see The Dressmaker at the cinema. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I enjoyed the quirkiness Aussie black humour. Maybe not for everyone but great acting by the Aussie cast and Kate Winslet was beautiful as always. The colour of the dresses and costumes against the brown, bleak town was another great contrast. Sad, funny and good male cast and a greater female cast.
