Kubrick's Barry Lyndon really comes to mind while watching this perfect gem. And so it should, because Barry Lyndon inspired Ridley Scott to create this lush period piece. It's visual style borrows much in its use of naturalistic lighting. I could rave on forever since this is one of my favourite films, but let's just say it's based loosely on a short story by Joseph Conrad (Hearts of Darkness) and is analogous of the inescapable futility of man's obsessions. And yes, I said 'man' because I ain't Woke.
