I början av 1700-talets England besitter en bräcklig drottning Anne tronen, och hennes närmaste vän, Lady Sarah, styr landet. När en ny tjänare, Abigail, anländer tar Sarah henne under sina vingars beskydd men Abigail börjar samtidigt planera för att återvända till sina aristokratiska rötter – vilket snart leder till en skandalös rivalitet om att bli drottningens favorit.

Notes et avis

It boggles my mind how "The Favourite" is classified as a comedy. Outside of a few funny scenes, it is filled with drama, tragedy, and misery. That's not to say it's a bad movie, but if you think you will see a light and funny period comedy, you will be sorely disappointed. There are no sympathetic characters here, everyone is either mean or mad. The cinematography is rather understated and apathetic with the colours all washed-out. The soundtrack is full of heavy and depressing period pieces. While it all started out quite amusing, by the end I was wishing I could travel back in time and slap myself into deleting it from my watchlist.
