Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates—including Jancey, a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moonee’s best friend—fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they’ve been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.

How this movie wasn't nominated for Best Picture and Best Director baffles me but I guess that's how Hollywood rolls. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the film, 10 minutes into it I was hooked. This isn't your typical run of the mill family drama and that's what I love about it. The tension and unsettling feeling of the characters compliment the story lines pace, beautiful colors and cinematography. This is by far one of the best pictures I've seen in a while and I'd watch this again.

Perhaps I did not understand this movie. I did not find the characters sympathetic. Everyone knows that there is abject poverty in the shadows of wealth and tourism. The struggling single mother? Anger issues, frustration, drugs, prostitution ...perhaps someone needed to call DSS. Was this a documentary? I just had to fast forward and I was glad I did not pay full price for this.

Waited for almost 2 hours for something exciting to happen. Never did. I don't usually review movies but confused on how this received so many stars. I'm glad I didn't pay for it. No story line at all. Boring.
