Orphaned when their parents are killed in an automobile accident, Ruby (16) and Rhett (11) are placed under the guardianship of longtime friends named Gary & Erin Glass. The successful and childless couple at first welcome and console the kids but their attitudes change with the passing of time. The rebellious Ruby begins to suspect that Erin is a junkie and Gary is a drug dealer in hock to the Mob.
