Based on the best-selling books by Suzanne Collins, THE HUNGER GAMES is the first film in the franchise. A wholesome and well-rounded film, with a gritty shooting style, clever visuals and a pretty good re-creation of several important elements. The acting is, for the most part, good, and the characterization is excellent. It is however let down by terrible adaptation. If one is to both read the books and watch the film, I would reccomend the best way to enjoy the film is to watch it first. Had the book series never existed, this would have been a 4 star view into a brilliantly executed dystopia.

It would seem this film gets upvoted by the stereotypical 13 year old Twilight girl because the story is terribly generic, the characters flat (nobody actually gives a crap about murdering each other) and the acting average at best. Cliche after cliche ruins the film, it's only redeeming features are the good props, sound effects, locations and costumes but a good film peripherals do NOT make.

Hugely disappointing. The running man, battle royale and the lord of the flies were much better films. Not hard to see where the plot was stolen from. Very shallow characters with a dull meandering plot made for a poor viewing. Lack of background knowledge of why the districts were impoverished, with only a brief mention of an uprising and a war didn't help to draw the viewer in. Sadly a waste of such talent as Harrelson and Sutherland with such superficial roles. Great book was, poor adaptation. -*
