This film has a gripping realism that is both exciting and colorful, but also excruciatingly tragic. I found myself, at times, overwhelmed with empathy for the characters as the story unfolded. There are moments that are almost too painful to watch. I paused the movie toward the end and started writing this review because I feel so anxious about the story's conclusion. I'm back and I'm not going to spoil it, except to say that there's a wonderful juxtaposition of a Mozart piano sonata blithely playing to the slow motion running of Yavanni through the streets of Havana. Antonio Hens is proving to be a brilliant film maker/director. I first encountered his work in a short film, En Malas Compañias, that demonstrated his strong sense of style and his penchant for an unabashed portrayal of sexually charged, homosexually oriented, young hispanic men who are barely at the cusp of manhood and have a primal urge to pursue their carnal desires.
