The one and two star reviews should be encouraging to anyone who wants a thoughtful and thought-provoking movie experience, though I would agree that to call it a "comedy" is misleading. There is satire, but not in the funny sense. Rather, it seems to me, that the movie is highlighting the superficial aspects of the struggle to find partnership and asking questions regarding the degree of self sacrifice that loving each other involves. As others have noted, the ending is particularly poignant. I really can't emphasize enough how ignorant and base the one and two star reviews seem. This is a beautiful and haunting movie.

NOTHING prepared me for the sexually explicit, cruel, and violent content in this film. Its premise is terrible enough; it wasn't necessary to show so much to tell the story. Though it's an interesting take on a dystopian society, I can't recommend this at all. I've made exceptions to my decision to avoid R rated movies for those of social relevance whose theme required content that garnered that rating ("Schindler's List", for example), but I was mistaken in believing this fit that category.

After a dog gets kicked and stabbed to death, my husband walked out. For some foolish reason I stuck with this film, thinking surely.. surely the plot was going somewhere. Nope. You get jerked around a bit, subject to some really flat humor, before you get the most underwhelming climax/conclusion ever. What a waste of money.
