Starring a phenomenal ensemble cast led by Matt Damon and George Clooney and based on a true and untold story of World War II, The Monuments Men is suspenseful ticking-clock adventure-thriller about a ragtag team of unlikely, but charismatic heroes, embarking on the greatest treasure hunt in history, taking on the seemingly impossible high-stakes mission to rescue the world's greatest works of art which the Nazi's are hell-bent on destroying.

It starts off with an emphasis that this movie is based on a true story, but it has been made into highly biased and glorified "Murica!" movie. The odd mixture of poignant reminders of WW2 with "Dad's Army"-style humour, comes across as a poorly executed knock-off to one of Tarantino's movies. It is something they want you to take serious, but you just can't. Quite a waste of the talent the cast could have provided, even more a waste of people's time.

I really wanted to like Monuments Men, but for a war film it just felt like a failed attempt of something great. If this had better direction it could've easily competed with the likes of 'War Horse' or 'Saving Private Ryan.' Unfortunately it didn't. So, what we're left with is a lighthearted adventure film that focuses too much on bland clichés and less on crafting a memorable story.

This is the best exemplar of where being the screenwriter, producer, director and lead actor fall over each other. It's not a terrible film - just that it could have been so much better.
