This is my absolute favourite movie from my childhood.. I still remember acting it out with my siblings. This digital copy is trimmed down, compared to the VHS copy I still own. For example: When Bastian gets out of the dumpster, and the bullies demand his return, he says "No, not again! NO! Not again!!" In the digital release on Google, the second "NO! Not again!!" is cut from the movie, leaving a very unfluid cut to the film. The audio is whisper quiet on my 32" RCA TV which normally stays at volume level 10. In order to watch, and listen to the film, I had it on, what would be deafening if turned back to cable, volume level 36. There is no subtitle support, so if you are hard of hearing, or deaf, there is , unfortunately, no love there for you. Had it been the full release of the film, at a reasonable audio quality, and with subtitles, it would have been a no brainer to award 5 stars.

There are moments of silly fantasy tropes and cliche in the dialogue. The child acting is forgiveably bad. That's all that's holding the movie back because the movie is well paced, well constructed and brimming with lovingly crafted scenarios and set pieces. The special effects are such a treat and more believable and immersive than any hokey amount of CGI that has crept into and ruined fantasy filmwork. This is a superb vehicle for any age of person to feel the powerful sense of adventure.

A great movie for all ages that tells a story of imagination and how we can lose our own ability to imagine our fantasies by being caught up in a world of nothingness. The message delivered in the movie has become even more relevant with time as books are rarely read anymore and have been replaced with TV shows and movies of stupidity. Keep imagining and find Magic in the world.
