Quality film true to Eggers style. I loved the cinematography, including the beautiful landscape shots to the powerful imagery. The viewer can feel very immersed at times thanks to the dialog and speaking accents, fantastic acting, and a lively musical score. Additionally, the set design and cultural behaviors help transport the viewer to a more primitive time. The storyline has supernatural elements while contrasting it with the reality of what the main character is experiencing. It helps keep the plot interesting because you're not entirely certain that what you're seeing is base reality for the story. I'm not quite sure if it's my favorite Eggers film yet, but it's a solid candidate that is absolutely worth the watch. I recommend watching with subtitles as sometimes the dialog can be tough to fully understand. 8/10
Great movie true to Nordic mythology, a shame it didn't gather much recognition; the cast was incredible (A+++ for Skarsgard), the sets felt real, I also felt immersed in the cold, harsh and tense atmosphere during the whole story. This movie really is a breath of fresh air in the current state of cinematography, kind of a return to the epic, heroic and a bit of fantasy style we used to have at the beginning of the 2000's. Really enjoyed it.
I've heard mixed reviews about this film. So glad I watched it for myself rather than listening to the reviews. "The Northman," can be described as a film that combines the beauty and primal nature of Norse mythology/folklore, with the raw, brutal, and ancient world of the Vikings and similar peoples. The story overall is classic and unique in its own rite. If you enjoy historic action-dramas, with a dash of myth, then this is for you. Not for faint hearts, or those with small minds.
