New York, 1959. Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane, in a Golden Globe-nominated performance) was once the king of Broadway, but now all his shows close on opening night. Then he's visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom (Matthew Broderick), who proposes a scheme tailor made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. It will close immediately, and you pocket the surplus. To this end, they produce a tasteless musical called "Springtime for Hitler" written by an escaped Nazi (Will Farrell). Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger DeBris (Gary Beach) to direct. Finally, they hire as a lead actress a loopy Swedish bombshell (Uma Thurman). So funny right from the beginning. Nathan Lane is brilliant, as is Matthew Broderick, who also sings beautifully. All the characters are loveable and the songs catchy. All in all a terrific movie
