Denis Leary plays an unfortunate cat burglar who becomes trapped in a fate worse than jail when he takes a bickering couple (Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis) and their annoying relatives hostage. Before long, they're driving him nuts, and the line between who is whose hostage begins to blur. His only hope for survival is to act as their referee and resolve their differences - or its going to mean instant insanity for everyone! This movie is a hidden gem! We watched it Christmas Eve with our adult children....a great way to show that your family isn't as bad as you think. LOL. Leary is outstanding, hilarious but the story also has a tender side. It might be a older movie but it's one people should still take time to revisit.

I know people exactly like every adult and child in The Ref. Let me tell you about my big sister... she needs a therapist like Leary BAD.

Why all of these talented actors signed on to this project is beyond me. Story is thin, acting is forced, comedy non-existent.
