A sixteen-year-old Arturs enlists to fight in WWI with dreams of becoming a hero, but after surviving the brutalities of trench warfare and the loss of his family, he wonders if his efforts in battle were futile and if hope is only to be found in rebuilding a family and a home as Latvia itself is born from the atrocities of war.

Not a sweet Hollywood shiny war movie, but a visceral roaring raid on your senses. The blood filled complexity of the soldier in WW1 is honoured here far more than many films ever do. The basic English dub can be forgiven due to the commitment of staying true to this true story, based on the banned book in Soviet times 'The Blizzard of Souls' which is the Latvian title. You can see here why Latvians are such tough people, even today. Definitely not for the faint of heart! Probably will watch again and I don't watch movies twice! A history piece.
