While this movie was 'based' on an award winning story, the scriptwriter adapting the story admitted he never read the book. Almost every member of the cast and production crew claimed to have not read the book. The symbolism is thrown out, the mythology is thrown out, major parts of the plot were thrown out. The author of the book herself decried the apocryphal adaptation of her characters. Maybe someone else will make this story into a film without worrying about Harry Potter similarities.

I read the book as a kid. The book had far more depth. The movie was ok but it seemed choppy and patched together. I guess when you condense it into a movie the sense of time and urgency is lost.

It's a horrifically bad mangling of an amazing story. This movie is such absolute trash, it's almost hilarious. In fact, just don't watch it at all. You will wish you had done something better with your time: like watch paint dry.
