From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro comes this otherworldly fairy tale set during 1960s Cold War America. This fiction seems real. Many negative reviews are because people expect melodrama/ action/ larger than life stories. This movie is not for those. Watch it to experience different aspects of human nature (affection, jealousy, ego, lust, friendship, compassion and of course love) P. S. This movie has "story", maybe not the one you routinely enjoy.

This is a wonderful, insanely touching film - if you go into it with an open heart. Basically, it's like a beautiful fairy tale, with meanies and simple but good people who do the right thing and act out of love. In this film, interestingly enough, it is also all outsiders who are discriminated against and belittled by society in 1960s America who show their good side, characterised by humanity and compassion. The characters are wonderfully multi-dimensionally drawn. The connection between Elisa and the water creature, a union of two similar souls guided by nothing but pure love, touched me deeply. Of course, the film is a bit cheesy, but aren't love stories always?
