Accused in the arson death of a mill foreman, liberal political activist Leopold Dilg (Cary Grant) hides at the home of Nora Shelley (Jean Arthur). When law professor and Supreme Court candidate Michael Lightcap (Ronald Colman) rents the house, he's first led to believe that Dilg is the gardener. As Nora keeps the police at bay, Lightcap eventually is persuaded that Dilg was framed and agrees to investigate. After finding a woman who says that the mill foreman is still alive, Dilg and Lightcap capture him. But after his escape lands Dilg behind bars, Lightcap continues searching for the foreman and the larcenous mill owner in order to finally clear his new friend's name. © 1942, renewed 1970 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. One of the must see Classics with an all-star cast skillfully combining comedy and drama. A study of corrupt politicians, an innocent man set-up and framed, and a revered legal scholar renting a summer retreat to pen a book. Jean Arthur shines in the hijinks, Grant in an atypical role where he's not a suave, debonair, tuxedo-clad leading man, and Ronald Colman unintentionally caught in the middle. Will he (Coleman) risk his reputation or will a manicure in town take him into a different direction? Keep an eye out for the future Uncle Joe from the Shady Rest, Edgar Buchanan who adds the seasoning to Jean Arthur's recipe. As an aside, don't read the synopsis of this movie - it's better to let it unfold as you watch vs reading highlights and the ending of a book.
