Written and directed by Sally Potter (Orlando), The Tango Lesson is the story of a filmmaker, Sally (Sally Potter), who becomes dissatisfied with her latest screenplay (vividly illustrated in luscious color) and stumbles upon an Argentinean tango dancer (Pablo Veron). She places herself under Pablo's tutelage and together they explore their spiritual and artistic connections. It soon becomes clear that they each want very different things from each other. Potter's raw examination of the artist's struggle for authenticity, set against the human frailties of ego, jealousy, lust and insecurity, makes for a tense drama — beautifully photographed in black and white and set in Paris and Buenos Aires. The three stars are for Google Play, not for the movie which I think is five stars. I bought this movie because I have always loved it and wanted to finally have a copy. However, this digital copy does not have English subtitles for the parts where the actors are speaking French or Spanish, which they do sometimes as it was filmed in Paris and Buenos Aries. In the description it mentions subtitles in English [CC]. Well, what this appears to mean is that when this is turned on, you get the English speaking parts closed captioned in English, but NO subtitles when the actors are speaking French or Spanish. Google Play needs to be more specific in their descriptions!!!

Dont get me wrong... When I first saw this my mind was full of question marks... But it has a great sentimentality about love and Argentina's Tango which makes me want to see over and over again. Definitely a fixture in my movie vault! I'm relieved that finally there's a way I can see it now because the DVDs were produced for region 2 only.
