The election of Cardinal Pacelli as Pope in March 1939 was unquestionable. His spiritual and intellectual prestige was well established, with a proven diplomatic experience having been nuncio in Berlin and Secretary of State under Pius XI. However, in 1963, after a few years of his death, his reputation came to be questioned after the scandal caused by the premiere of the play The Deputy, by Rolf Hochhuth. This text speaks of the Vatican's relations with Germany during World War II and the responsibility for the inaction of Pope Pius XII versus the Holocaust. This documentary film offers an approach to the reality of the facts that gave rise to a controversy which is still open.
